November Sandstorm is collaborative exhibition by Finnish artists Jaakko Mattila and EGS. Last seen together in exhibition in London in the Spring of 2019, the two artists have decided to show their latest creations in tandem as they express a unique view of the world we live in today.
Mattila has worked for decades with the fundamental elements that create our senses or illusions of the world, that bring the principles of the universe, infinity, smallness and greatness, and time together.
EGS has been pivotal in the historical documentation and dissemination of the graffiti practice itself. An artist- archivist spurred by an intense desire to explore both the formal and folkloric truths of graffiti, to uncover its deeply social and material foundations.
EGS (b. 1974) began his career as a graffiti artist back when the first wave of graffiti art hit Finland in the mid-1980s. Today he is Finland’s most acclaimed artist of his genre, with works found in over 50 countries. EGS is known for his stylized world maps in which the three letters of his name are merged with geography. EGS has recently expanded his repertoire to sculpture and blown glass. He has exhibited in galleries and museums and has also completed public art commissions.
Jaakko Mattila (b. 1976) is a Finnish painter from Oulu. He studied and graduated from The Surrey Institute of Art & Design University College in 2001. Since then, his works have been exhibited in galleries and institutions as far and wide as Japan, the United Kingdom, Italy and France, as well as in various public spaces throughout the world. His work is held in various collections including Sara Hildén Art Museum.
